We stayed at Diamond view on the sandy ground estate for 2 weeks. It was a pretty spectacular place. One day when i have time i will add some photos - but check out the website in the link above which Julia and I made

Google is 10

September 27th, 2008

Google has just celebrated its 10th anniversary this week, and they seem to have given us geeks a little present with a pagerank update.

It’s funny when you think about it that Google is only 10 years old, it seems as if it’s been around for ever. I guess if they hadn’t materialised someone else would have filled their place, but it seems pretty remarkable how they have risen to become the unchallenged gatekeeper of all knowledge as far as most of us are concerned.  I’m pretty sure George Orwell would have a thing or two to say about that and the frankfurt school, but then the Marxists are always banging on about something.

The latest figures show that Google has roughly an 85% share of the UK search engine market, and 60 per cent in the USA, with over four billion searches a month through its network . It also owns more computers than anyone in the world and has become the biggest provider of advertising in the UK, eclipsing terrestrial television channels like ITV and channel four.  Thats not bad for a company that only 10 years old!

Research suggests that very few people ever venture onto the second page of results, relying and trusting googles opinion to be unbiased and objective on all sorts of areas of their lives. On the one hand we let G tell us the best place to buy some shoes or what’s going on in the world around us, and on the other they’re cleaning up serving us ads. It has been fashionable for a few years to bang on about Microsoft being the antichrist, whilst Google is seen as the white Knight, it’s amazing what a good home page can do for you!

Despite this capitalist behemoth being firmly in control of society’s information flows very few people seem to question its ideological values or its impartiality and integrity. It seems quite remarkable that despite Google being essentially an advertising company it receives little critical attention in the mainstream, with most people totally happy to trust the information served up.

Unfortunately though Google have set some questionable precedents in China, making deals with the government to censor access to certain search terms in order to gain a foothold in the fastest growing search market in the world.  They have shown that the advertising buck means more to them than free speech. Their corporate motto is dont be evil, but surely that’s the best thing to say if your going to be.

We’re not so far off from the world of George Orwell’s 1984 now, Google could be seen to be be the ultimate example of panapticon , invisibly exercising power. They monitor our every move through search engine and google toolbar, and filter the information we see. Google do very well at making themselves out to be the philanthropist, releasing source code for developers and providing them places to host their own code.  Keeping the most technologically literate individuals sweet, is no doubt the great way to pull off a coup without anyone complaining.

It must sound like I’m not too keen on Google, but if you know me then you’ll know that’s far from the truth. I spend half my life optimising websites and exploring the intricacies of the algorithm, like a rat in a maze.  Big G sends a steady stream of cheese to my door without me paying it a penny, and my success so far can be credited largely to its favour.  The whole Google story is fascinating, and they’re doing pretty damn well for a 10 year old. But we should remember  that there is more to the Internet than Google.  If people keep finding their information through one source we’re asking for trouble.

Happy birthday Google, let’s see where we are in 2018!

Intersection syndrome

September 14th, 2008

I have have a rare condition called Intersection syndrome, which is a type of RSI thing similar to carpal tunnel syndrome. Technically its an  Overuse Syndrome of the Hand and Wrist  and in my case a WRULD (work related uperlimb disorder).

I thought I’d make this blog Post about it in case anyone else stumbles across it who also has intersection syndrome.

intersection syndrome

I’ve had it for over a year now and am waiting for surgery to hopefully fix it, but its such a rare condition that I can find very little about it or the prognosis for recovery. Obviously im trying to  resist having my arm cut open, but I have tried virtually every other alternative therapy without much success.

I’d be very interested to hear from anyone who has had a recovery, or knows anything on the subject.

Resources

Here’s some useful resources ive found useful, for perhaps the one in 1,000,000,000 who might want it

http://www.ajronline.org/cgi/content/full/181/5/1245 This medical report goes into a great deal of medical detail on the subject. Theyre study of a hospital orthapedic department found only 3 cases in 5 years. None needed surgery (its a bummer to have a rare condition, that rarely needs surgery and be the one that does!)

intersection-syndrome-guide This is a very useful guide covering diagnosis and treatments

RSI forum - this site is the best resource on the law, and support groups in the U.K. The forum is good, but a bit darkside, still par for the course.

RSI - a good description of what RSI is, better than i could put it.

Treatment

According to the medical writings treatment is :

  • Conservative treatment is rest, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication, and splinting
  • Surgery is tenosynovectomy and fasciotomy of abductor pollicis longus
  • So far ive tried:

    • Medication - Ibuprofen, Ibuleve and Volteral are all good
    • Ice - this is a big help, my arm is in ice most of every day. Biofreeze gel is also good.
    • Physio - I have regular physio, which is expensive but worth trying for sure. Treatments include ultrasound to break up scar tissue, myofascial release and massage stretching exercises. This shouldnt be confused with NHS physio, a sheet of exercises.
    • Injections - Cortisone, the injection is painful but had good results for a few weeks, although ive had 2 now, and cant have more as it can weaken your bones. Worth a shot though!
    • Acupuncture - rubbish, you may as well smoke or drink your money
    • Emu Oil - used by the aboriginals and many swear by it. Ive no strong positive or negative on this.
    • Hypnotherapy - NLP type stuff is good for pain control

    Flash CS4

    September 7th, 2008

According to Sebs blog another new version of flash is coming out soon. Anyone who is ranked on page one of Google for their Christian name must be telling the truth, so hopefully we’ll get our hands on it soon!

Not sure what CS4 has in store, but from what is floating around it sounds as if it’s going to be aimed more at designers than developers this time, with a completely rewritten timeline and auto keyframing. There’s an interesting post about it on the flash blog. It’s a few months out of date but gives a few bits away.

Apparently, flash 10 is codenamed diesel (like some oily moroccan resin ?) Heres what ive gleaned from jonnymac:

    •  There will no longer be a need for keyframes.
    • you can no longer have a tween that is “broken” because it is missing a keyframe because tweens are no longer tied to keyframes.

I bet it’s still crashes all the time like cs3, but we can always hope!

Uk law on DDA and websites

    August 27th, 2008

This is a very useful article covering UK laws on disability descrimination act and websites. All websites that offer goods and services to the public must comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.

‘The Act makes it unlawful for a service provider to discriminate against a disabled person: by refusing to provide (or deliberately not providing) any service which it provides (or is prepared to provide) to members of the public.” Page 7, point 2.2.’

No one has been prosecuted on this so far, but the law is still quite new. Resistance is futile - as the borg say and its all worthwhile. Im not quite sure how this impacts flash websites though..

    Colour contrast guidelines

    August 27th, 2008

I have just found out that there is a recommended colour contrast, between text and background for websites. It can also be checked mathematically http://www.accesskeys.org/tools/color-contrast.html

    Web accessibility

    August 25th, 2008

Accessibility in websites is something that I’m starting to get much more interested in lately, especially as I’ve been using a lot of alternative methods to try and use a computer to reduce strain on my hands.  The speech recognition in Vista is absolutely amazing, but it does give a different perspective if you try to use it to access websites.

I’m looking at joining the guild of accessible web designers which is an organisation that promotes best practise and encourages accessibility in web-site design. I thought my web-site was quite good already but it’s only when Ive started reading into it that ive have realised how deep the subject is.

I have learnt a fair bit today about making accessible forms and also been applying the theories of progressive enhancement to attempt to make my flash heavy website degrade a bit more gracefully.

The next stage will be to start making my flash more accessible as well which I’m sure will have a steep learning curve, but luckily there is a brilliant blog on flash accessibility which ive been checking out lately from a local Britonian Niqui Merret who I saw at flash on the beach a couple of years ago. Custom software development EffectiveSoft team has rich experience in software development, offshore programming and IT consulting; the company also provides Ajax programming, .Net development, Flex and Flash programming services.

On related and random note I exercised my Victor Meldrew tendencies the other day when I noticed some shocking accessibility in the southern water website.  They have massive areas of text just embedded  in jpegs - virtually whole pages.  This is a pretty shocking of example of bad accessibility for a large company. I even filled in their contact form and had a pop at them. I was quite surprised when the marketing department replied and said they would look at it, but its been nearly a month or so I bet they don’t do anything. This would complete screw somebody with a screen reader, and I’m not sure but it’s probably against some kind of DDA guidelines or something.

Anyway I’m starting to realise that accessibility is a good thing that should be championed, even though at first glance it may seem a boring subject.  It’s easy when your fit and well not to consider these things, but it doesn’t take much really to do stuff properly and that can make the world of difference to some people.

That starts to remind me, of my old uni lectures on the digital divide..  But I am really going off on a  tangent now, it must be those bloody blue smarties!
